What is a Herbal Formula?

Herbal formulas are blends of dried plants or liquid plant extracts. They work in synergy with each other and with body systems to bring the body into greater balance. The formulation process takes into consideration each individual’s physiologic and energetic patterns and constitution, in tandem with their personal health goals.

Types of formulas most often used include:

A tinted glass tincture bottle and a pink rose.

Tinctures

Liquid extracts of plant chemistry preserved in alcohol, glycerine, or vinegar. Tinctures are easy to take and are well assimilated into the body.

Tea in a tea strainer on a wooden table.

Infusions

Water-based extractions - a stronger and more concentrated version of a tisane.

conifer needles, cone, and pink flowers floating in a glass cup, placed on the pages of an open book.

Decoctions

An infusion made by simmering plant material that is a bit harder to extract, such as roots, barks, and berries.

Three small piles of powdered herbs on a marble surface.

Powders

Plant material and/or plant extracts ground into a powder that can easily be added to food or certain beverages.

*In some instances preparations for external use may be used, including balms, salves, steams, or hydrosols.
